What To Do In Free Time At Home, or maybe even work!

What to do in free time at home

Bored!

Stop Wasting Time…

I have wasted countless hours over the years in the pursuit of what to do in free time at home and the down times at work. I have created many different characters for various games that I eventually lost interest in. So it occurred to me, to wonder what could I do, that I would enjoy and yet be more productive.

What I will share below stems from the discovery that I enjoy writing, and expressing my thoughts and opinions. I don’t view my writing skills as very good, but I am also not terrible. I have had enough people comment on my various posts to know that people can at least tolerate my writing skills. So if you are like me and you enjoy writing I would encourage you to read on, and then write on! 🙂

Actually before discovering my interest in writing, I discovered Wealthy Affiliate, a website dedicated to helping people run their own online websites. That link takes you to my overview page of Wealthy Affiliate. My chief interest in this new thinking was making money in my spare time, and of course making tons of it. lol I haven’t made tons of money yet, but oh so slowly, like my skills and knowledge, it grows. Anyway that’s not the point of this post.

The Point!?

If you love writing or expressing yourself, or you’re an expert in a given topic, or even just a huge fan of a given topic, I would highly encourage you to start writing for your own website. If you are a blogger and your writing on some standard platform move it to your own website. For free, 100% free! You might ask yourself why would I take the time and bother to do this? Lets see how many reasons I can come up with.

First, do you really want to create a new gaming character that you will just lose interest in, in a few months, or maybe a year or so? All those hours could be used in something you enjoy, plus in the end, return the value of your time.

Second, if you’re a blogger writing on a generic platform, you are building content for someone else’s website, contributing your time, and resources to their success.

Third, if you are simply a frequent poster on a chat board, or Facebook, etc, you could be running the chat board, and sharing it on Facebook.

Fourth, you could see compensation for your effort. That was my purpose when I started this. I want/wanted out of my day job and this looked like an easy and immediate path to that goal.

Example:

What To Do In Free Time At HomeLets say you are a fisherman, or woman, and you like to share your pictures, and stories on Facebook. Lets say you really do enjoy this. Recall this is just a random example, the topic of fishing could be anything, as is the medium Facebook. When you share your thoughts, feelings, pictures and videos on Facebook you are writing content for Facebook or for whatever group you are a part of.. If you are a consistent writer someone is using that to build their own authority on the given topic. You could be putting that content on your own website, and sharing it on your own Facebook group that then begins to promote your own authority on the topic at hand.

Two paths..

In my way of thinking this puts you on one of 2 paths. Either you will write content for you website, and struggle with getting an audience, or you will stumble upon a topic that is trending, and it will quickly take off as far as people visiting your site, and your groups. On the first path, there are various tactics to slowly build your audience, and followers, etc. It is the path my other website, Juicenjoy has taken so far. If your interest is as simple as writing, and having an audience this is perfect. You just write your posts, and then share them wherever you like. The more you write the more exposure you will gain. Only it will be to your benefit not others.

The second path is kind of obvious and more difficult to achieve but it does happen all the time.

I hope you found this post interesting, sometimes when I write I feel like I am all over the map, in fact with this post I am feeling like that. in any case I would love to hear your comments both good and bad, and answer any of your questions. Take a moment to comment below, and I will reply asap! I share my posts, so follow me on Facebook if you like.

BTW when you comment on this post… you are adding to my content and authority. 🙂 The good news is its very much appreciated, and I always return the favor!

  1. I have finished work for health reasons – perhaps this may be the answer to what to do in my free time. It also might just help with my financial plight. Is it true that I can do this for free?

    • Hi Terry, The short answer to your question is yes, you can do it for free. Free or not, you will need some patience and sticktoitness. It took me about 6 months before I really started seeing results.

  2. What a great idea. I had never thought about looking at my facebooks as a way to find a great niche to write in. Thanks for the idea and motivation to try something new.

    • I love how much I have learned about all these different things in the last year. I started with nothing, and with Wealthy Affiliate I have learned tons!! I kind of stumbled onto the Facebook thing on accident although i am sure there’s training on that as well. 🙂

  3. Hi Vic,

Great post here – it’s insane how many hours we waste doing stuff that doesn’t really matter. A lot of the time I’ve wasted in the past was not really because I wanted to waste time, but just because I didn’t have anything to pore myself into.

You’re right, pretty much anyone with OK writing skills can write about what they love and make a good part-time (or even full-time) income.

    Take care,
    Sean

    • Your comment about “nothing to pore myself into” Just hits it so right on. That is seriously what i love about writing for my own website. Im surprised how well even just an average writer can do with patience and diligence.

Glad to see you have found something productive to do in your free time at home, or work? 😉

  4. Hey, I think we are all guilty of wasting our time doing something non productive when we could be using our time more wisely. The idea of creating a website and blogging about a topic that we are passionate about is an excellent one. And you never know we could make a little extra cash as well, everyone’s a winner.
Great article, thank you very much.

    • Sometimes i wish I could have all the wasted time back, but in reality I did enjoy my gaming time, and trivial pursuits. I have just found something that is so much more productive and as enjoyable!! Win win.

  5. Hey Vic

Great post on using your spare time wisely! I can relate to soo much of it as I started my own website some time back and thoroughly enjoy every second I spend on it now.

Would like to add that it’s not just about writing though. Video can fill up a website just as quick as writing for those of you who are a little lazy like me 😉

Either way, it all boils down to talking about something you are truly passionate about!

Keep up the awesome work…. And I second your recommendation for Wealthy Affiliate! Most comprehensive training I have found online to date.

    cheers

    • I appreciate you sharing your thoughts on using video. Lazy I am, however shy also. 🙂 Ill have spend some time thinking about how that would look.

So Glad you stopped by and left a comment. 🙂

  6. Hi VIC,
Learning how to use your spare effectively can go a long way to help you build a solid online business that can make you money, this is the lesson I learn from this awesome article.

Most of the time we spend our leisure time doing things that are unfruitful, if we can channel this in a useful way, then we will be managing time effectively, if not, we are wasting a chunk of our life. Instead of spending time doing unnecessary things in our spare time, we can still do something we love and make our life meaningful.

    Thank you for this post!

    • Thanks for stopping by and commenting, I spent quite a bit of time thinking about what to do in my free time. Im glad that time led me to writing for my own websites. 🙂

  7. If I can put in as much work and effort as I did pimping myself out as a work slave I’ll be highly successful. We get to work how many hours for ourselves now and the benefits will be huge and I expect success just like your employer expected an honest days work from us.
We will reap what we sow.
Enjoyed your post very much, well done!
    Peter

    • Its kind of funny but your comment reminds me sharply of some of the thoughts that were running thru my head when i was writing. Age 59 im done with pimping myself, sooner if things keep improving with my websites like they have.

Thanks for stopping by and sharing your thoughts. Good luck to you and check back sometime.

  8. Finally I found a website with all the information that I was looking for.
You have some great information here! I am just learning about what to do in free time at home, so I learned a lot.
    Thanks!
    You saved my day.

  9. Your post, What to do in free time at home or maybe work sounds just like me. I never seem to do well with free time, I blunder through this and that but nothing feels quite right. I still feel unaccomplished at the end of the day. I think creating my own website would be an amazing task and fulfilling. Thank you for putting a wrench in my boredom friendly day. I need to pick up my feet and start something good

    • Debra, that’s a great first step just realizing that you do have time to pick up a new and likely rewarding hobby. I think its important to seek balance. Remember that not all time “doing nothing” is wasted time but simple relaxation. That one is a bit tough for me to remember. I sure do enjoy writing thought so its been a real benefit to help relax and get rewarding results.
